The Program

Over the years, children from low income families have shown a need for necessities such as basic school supplies, backpacks, lunch kits and the required 3 pairs of shoes (in-door, out-door and gym).

Working with our partner Giant Tiger we are working towards providing them with a gift-voucher! * In September 2011 it had a value of $40.00, to be used in store on school supplies, backpacks, basic clothing, snacks, etc.

* A money donation is the most efficient way to help low-income families, because they often have some of their school essentials already.

I still wish to donate school supplies: Find out how.

Going back to school with their heads held high

kid_backChildren who are reduced to carrying supplies in a plastic bag and wearing flip flops until the snow falls can easily become targets of bullying and intimidation.

With the cost of living what it is today, our program will ease a lot of already-tight budgets and will ensure that children go back to school with their head held high!

Give them hope! The Sharing in Student Success Program accepts donations all year round.

Share in Student Success, Leave no Child Behind

As you may know, the Caring and Sharing Exchange has been the new umbrella name of the organization since September 2011, when a new exciting program called Sharing in Student Success started.

This program provides assistance mainly in the form of redeemable gift-vouchers to Giant Tiger, and also collects and distributes school supplies.

After the first fundraising campaign, 2,426 children received direct assistance through Sharing in Student Success, for back-to-school season! Another 1,150 children were helped by other partnering agencies. How do we know?

Just as we have done since 1915 with Christmas assistance, hundreds of agencies in the area were encouraged to register the names of low-income families who needed assistance. By cross-referencing the compiled list of over 4,342 registered children, this Coordination Service detected over 250 duplicate applications!

This allowed community donations to be distributed further to more families, helping thousands of children go back to school with the necessary tools to learn successfully.

Unfortunately 468 children were left on the waiting list. With one in three children in Ottawa currently living in poverty, the organizers expect the demand this year to be greater. This year, let’s give every child the chance to go to school with their heads held high!

“I can’t tell you how much my two kids were excited about the new purchases that we were able to do thanks to your gift-voucher, like comfortable shoes and backpacks. We are sincerely touched by your generous gesture. We will never forget your sense of solidarity.”
